Crafting Honey with Care

Every jar of Huonbrook Honey reflects the care and dedication of Beekeeper Kevin O’Brien. Personally tending to each hive and overseeing every extraction, Kevin ensures our Australian raw honey remains pure and authentic. Unlike companies that source from independent producers, our family-run business takes pride in intimately knowing our bees, our hives, and our honey—delivering the true essence of the Northern Rivers in every spoonful.

A Family-Owned Local Treasure from Northern Rivers

Nestled in the heart of the lush Northern Rivers, NSW, Huonbrook Honey is a family-run business that thrives on nature’s purity and abundance. Surrounded by pristine rainforests, spring-fed creeks, and vibrant wildlife, our hives are carefully placed in one of Australia’s most biodiverse regions—cocooned by Blackbutt Plateau, Mt Jerusalem, Nightcap National Park, and Whian Whian National Park.

Our Bushflower Honey is sourced from hives flourishing in this untouched environment, producing honey that captures the rich, floral essence of the land. Meanwhile, our Manuka Honey hives are strategically located in the wild tea tree scrub along the Northern NSW coastline, where bees forage freely in a natural environment, untouched by sugar feeding, antibiotics, or additives.

Meet Beekeeper Kevin O’Brien

In 1987, Kevin O’Brien arrived in Huonbrook, inspired by the dream of creating a self-sufficient lifestyle in the pristine beauty of the Northern Rivers. A carpenter by trade, Kevin built his own home, grew fruit and vegetables, raised chickens, and acquired his first beehives—unaware that this small venture would evolve into a lifelong passion.

As a Commercial Beekeeper and Primary Producer, Kevin is hands-on in every aspect of his craft. Drawing on his carpentry skills, he builds all of his own hives, boxes, and frames, ensuring his colonies thrive in high-quality, carefully constructed homes. What began as a humble beekeeping practice soon grew into a thriving business, fuelled by his commitment to producing pure, sustainable honey.

Honey Through the Generations

A deep love for bees has been passed down through Kevin’s family like a well-worn heirloom. Pictured here is Kev’s grandfather, quietly tending his hives — the beginning of a lineage of beekeepers whose knowledge has been handed from father to son. These are skills shaped by time, weather, and generations of close observation.

Honey runs in Kev’s blood, and it shows — not just in the way he cares for his bees, but in his passion for sharing the vital role they play in our ecosystems. For Kev, it’s never been just about the honey. It’s about honouring the bees, supporting the industry, and helping the community understand how deeply our survival is tied to theirs.

Resilience and Dedication

Kevin’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. From battling hive diseases in the 1990s to rebuilding after the devastating 2022 floods, which wiped out 80% of his hives, he has faced each obstacle with determination. These experiences have only strengthened his dedication to ethical, sustainable beekeeping.

A proud and active member of the Northern Rivers Amateur Beekeeping Association, Kevin continues to refine his craft, staying connected with fellow beekeepers and advocating for sustainable apiculture. For him, beekeeping is more than a profession—it’s a way of life. Every jar of Huonbrook Honey is a testament to his hands-on care, respect for nature, and unwavering commitment to the bees that make it all possible.
